The Ghost Filter Prank: How to Make It

A pale figure appears in a photo where there should be nobody. You send it to a friend and wait for the reply. Here is how the prank works, and how to keep it fun.

What the ghost filter prank is

The idea is old, but AI made it easy. You take a normal photo or short clip of a hallway, a bedroom or a doorway, then add a faint, translucent figure standing behind you or in the background. You send it with a message like "Why was there someone behind me?" and then film or screenshot the response.

It is most popular around Halloween, and it comes in two forms. One is a still photo with a ghost added. The other is a short video in which the figure drifts into the shot.

Free ghost effects exist inside some apps, but they are usually a fixed overlay. AI versions can place the figure to match the light and the room, which is what makes people look twice.

What makes it look convincing

  • A real, boring location. A hallway, a staircase, a kitchen at night. The more ordinary the room, the better the prank works.
  • Low light and a little grain. Bright, sharp photos make a ghost look like a sticker.
  • Empty space behind you. If the figure has clear room to stand in, it looks like it belongs there.
  • Subtle is better than loud. A faint figure at the edge of the frame beats a huge face in the middle.
  • A short clip. Two to four seconds is enough. The longer it runs, the easier it is to spot.
  • Natural wording. Send it the way you would send a real thing you had just noticed.

Who to prank, and who to leave alone

  • Adults who like a joke. A friend, a partner, a sibling who loves horror.
  • Not children. The version that went viral involved parents scaring kids, and it drew criticism. Do not scare a child with something that looks real.
  • Not anyone anxious, unwell or elderly. If you are not sure how they will take it, skip it.
  • Always tell them within a minute or two. A prank is only fun if it ends in a laugh.

Before you post it

  1. Get consent from anyone in the shot. If the clip shows a real person being startled, ask first.
  2. Use adults only. No children in the clip.
  3. Do not use public figures.
  4. Label it as AI-generated. TikTok, Instagram and YouTube all expect it for realistic video. Our guide to posting AI videos shows where the switch is.
  5. Do not claim it is real. A caption like "my house is haunted" with a faked clip can break platform rules on misleading content.

How long will the trend last?

Ghost filter videos spike in October and drop soon after Halloween on October 31. Posts from the first days of a trend get the most attention, so if you want to join in, do it this week.

FAQ

What is the ghost filter prank?

You send someone a photo or short video in which an AI-made ghost seems to stand behind you or in the room, then record how they react.

Is the ghost filter prank safe?

It is harmless between adults who are in on the joke. Do not use it on children or on people who may be genuinely frightened, and tell the person it was fake straight away.

Do I need a special app?

You can do it with many tools, and some apps have built-in ghost effects. AI tools give a more natural look, since they fit the figure to the photo.

Do I have to label the video as AI?
